SEARCHLIGHT

I cast safety over the quadrangle. And
flash away light to assist watchmen
in crippling inmates from going out.

I scan every nook and cranny, sweep
the horizon to extinguish the dark
that solicits blueprint for an escape.

Every night, I elongate my leg.
But I cannot stretch it far enough.
I have not kicked a barbwire yet.
